The Maryland Historical Society is the official steward or Maryland’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Among the treasures of the Society’s Library is a rare set of the Baltimore Saturday Visiter and the manuscript for the poem published as “Alone” (“From childhood’s hour I have not been . . . ”) The collection also includes a number of first editions as well as books and clippings about Poe. The photography collection includes the Painter Daguerreotype (a copy of the “Stella” daguerreotype) and one of only three known carte-de-visite copies of the now lost “Daly” daguerreotype.“

Directions:

The Maryland Historical Society is at 201 West Monument Street. (See map under Images.)

From the Poe Grave: Go north on Paca or Martin Luther King Boulevard to Mulberry Street. Turn right on Mulberry, which is one-way, heading east. Pass over Cathedral and turn left on Charles Street, heading north. As you approach the Washington Monument, Charles Street breaks on either side. Keep to the left. Immediately on passing the monument, turn left on Monument Street. Go one block to the light. Turn left on Cathedral (one way south) and immediately turn right to resume Monument Street. Pass over Park Avenue and the Historical Society is directly on your left.

From the Inner Harbor, south of town: Take Charles Street (one way) north. As you approach the Washington Monument, Charles Street breaks on either side. Keep to the left. Immediately on passing the monument, turn left on Monument Street. Go one block to the light. Turn left on Cathedral (one way south) and immediately turn right to resume Monument Street. Pass over Park Avenue and the Historical Society is directly on your left.

Parking: Some metered parking is available on the street. There is a lot behind the building (payment required).

Note: Use caution when parking in an urban environment. Common sense dictates that you lock your car and keep any valuables out of sight.
