(Born: March 28, 1806 - Died: 1875)

One of several children of William and Jane Mackenzie, the family that took in the young Rosalie Poe. He was born in Richmond, VA. He married Louisa Lanier on October 9, 1827. She died about 1865, and on July 9, 1872 he married Mary Frances Lapham, and moved to Danville, VA, to the Lapham family farm, where he died in 1875. During the Civil War, John H. Mackenzie served in the confederate army, attaining the rank of Major. He was buried in the Old Grove Street Cemetery, in Danville. His birth and marriage dates (first marriage) are recorded in the Mackenzie family bible, for which copies of the original may be found in the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, VA.
