Mrs. Annie Locke Richmond

(Born: April 12, 1820 - Died: February 9, 1898)

Her maiden name was Nancy Locke Heywood. On May 26, 1840, she married Charles Bradford Richmond (November 25, 1816 - August 25, 1873), a wealthy paper manufacturer. She formally adopted the use of “Annie” sometime after her husband’s death (see Miller, Building Poe Biography, p. 250).

She and Poe met around July of 1848 in Lowell, Massachusetts, where Poe was lecturing on “The Poets and Poetry of America.”
