Cogan, Edward, The Collection of Coins of the Late James E. Root, Esq. New York, December 16-18, 1878. (This James Edward Root apparently lived in Boston, having moved there about 1871. There was an auction of his collection, April 22, 1879.) He died September 20, 1875. (According to the Root Genealogy, he was born on August 18, 1817, p. 241, in Milton, NY, near Saratoga Springs.)

A letter dated Oct. 18, 1838 from J. F. Cooper to Root, in reply to a request for an autograph was sold at  Anderson Galleries, April 25-27, 1916 (item 54).
