1827 - March (?)

RCL-015a

Mrs. F. Allan (Richmond, VA) to Poe (en route to Boston, MA?) (two letters). Cited by Whitty [1911], p. xxx; and Phillips, 1:294. Phillips describes these as freeing “him [Poe] from all blame in the Allan family [sic] disturbing affairs.” Poe apparently kept both letters, at some point giving them to his wife, Virginia. After her death in 1847, they supposedly passed to Poe's cousin, Elizabeth R. Herring (by then, Mrs. Edmund Smith). Phillips also implies letters from Poe to Mrs. F. Allan, but it is little more than a reasonable speculation on her part. Unfortunately, Phillips also repeats a story that Poe “wrote his foster-mother when he was in Europe,” which may be dismissed along with the long discredited notion that Poe ran off to Europe in 1827. (RCL08-15a.)

Poe (Baltimore, MD) to Miss K. Bleakley (Baltimore, MD). Cited by Phillips, 1:421-423, where she notes that Poe wrote Miss Kate Bleakley “verses and letters.” Her father, Matthew Bleakley, was the proprietor of the Armistead Hotel, “on 'short Swan Street,' between Market Space and Jones Falls.” Miss Bleakley was later married, twice (first to Mr. W. B. Paine and then Mr. Henderson). All of these papers were apparently burned after the death of Miss Bleakley's daughter, Annie Paine, following an outbreak of yellow fever in New Orleans, LA. Phillips gives her source as an article in the NY Herald (14 June 1903). (RCL08-65a.)

~~ 1832 ~~

1832 - (?)

RCL-070a

There are no cited or specifically identifiable letters for this period, although Whitty [1911] says “An old printer told me that he carried letters for Poe from Baltimore to Richmond prior to 1835” (p. xxxv). Whitty states that Poe learned through this correspondence that John Allan was ill, and arranged a trip to Richmond about June 1832 in hope of a reconciliation. Whitty further suggests that this correspondence was with Miss Valentine (Mrs. F. Allan's sister) and “the old Allan servants.” Allen repeats part of this story, saying “A printer by the name of Askew is known to have carried letters back and forth for Poe from Richmond” (Allen, p. 1:337, where he gives his source as “information given to the author in Richmond, July, 1925”). (RCL08-70a.)

1832 - Summer (?)

RCL-070b

Poe (Baltimore, MD) to Miss M. Starr (Exeter St., Baltimore, MD). Cited in A. Van Cleef, “Poe's Mary,” Harper's Monthly (March 1889, 78:638): “After the quarrel I have just told you about I . . . returned his letters unopened. My mother also forbade him the house. He sent me a letter by Virginia. I sent it back unopened. He wrote again, and I opened the letter. He addressed me formally as Miss —, and upbraided me in satiric terms for my heartless, unforgiving disposition.” TOM [Poems] 1:232 accepts the story as “basically true but probably overcolored,” although he dates the romance as 1834. Mary Starr is sometimes referred to as Mary Devereaux, using the last name of her Baltimore uncle, James Devereaux, as “Poe's Mary,” or simply as “Baltimore Mary.” (RCL08-70b.)

1832 - Summer (?)

RCL-070c

J. Devereaux (Exeter St., Baltimore, MD) to Poe (Baltimore, MD). Cited in A. Van Cleef, “Poe's Mary,” Harper's Monthly (March 1889, 78:638): “My uncle was very indignant, and resented Mr. Poe's letter so much that he wrote him a very severe, cutting letter, without my knowledge.” (RCL08-70c.)

1832 - Summer (?)

RCL-070d

J. Allan (Richmond, VA) to Poe (Baltimore, MD). Cited in A. Van Cleef, “Poe's Mary,” Harper's Monthly (March 1889, 78:636): “Mr. Poe once gave me a letter to read from Mr. Allan, in which the latter said, referring to me, that if he married any such person he would cut him off without a shilling.” This entry is included with reservations. Notes:

The present Check List is a revision and an expansion of Ostrom's A Check List of Letters to and from Poe (published as No. 4 in the Bibliographical Series sponsored by the Alderman Library of the University of Virginia, 1941) and subsequent editions (1948, 1966, 1974, and 1981). As a result of considerable study and analysis of Poe's correspondence and various other resources, the original list has been essentially eclipsed, and even the revised versions have now been supplanted. (The present Check List was originally developed as a web-based version of Ostrom's 1981 “Revised Check List,” with numerous corrections made by Jeffrey A. Savoye. That corrected and improved Check List was incorporated in the 2008 edition of The Collected Letters of Edgar Allan Poe.) A number of entries from newspaper lists of letters left unclaimed have been provided to the Poe Society by Ton Fafianie. Additional corrections to the present Check List are solicited, and may be provided through the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore.
