[page 2, column 2, continued:]

We copy from that very able paper the Broadway Journal, the following smart hints to our great publishers, contained in a critique on EOTHEN, a work which has not yet found its way to us. We are glad to see that Mr. Poe intends to bring to a speedy end his skirmishing with an anonymous defender of Mr. LONGFELLOW, whom Mr. Poe has charged with plagiarism. With much respect for his abilities, we would remind him that brevity is the soul of wit. The Broadway Journal is filed in our Reading Room.

EOTHEN, or Traces of Travel brought Home from the East. No. 1, of Wiley & Putnam's Library of Choice Reading.

“If the days of “cheap and nasty” literature are not ended, we have proof before us that the day of cheap and elegant literature has at least dawned. [[. . . ]]

Notes:

The review of Eothen, or Traces of Travel appeared in the Broadway Journal for March 22, 1845. The full review is quoted, except for the final sentence, which apologizes for not having the space for excerpts. W. D. Hull attributes the favorable review to C. F. Briggs rather than Poe, and Pollin adheres to this opinion.
