[page 2, column 2, continued:]

WORKS OF EDGAR A. POE, with notices of his life and genius, by N. P. WILLIS, J. R. LOWELL and R. W. GRISWOLD; in two volumes; New York: J. S. Redfield, 1850.

Virginia readers, especially, will greet these volumes, with an eager desire to peruse and possess them. They contain most of the prose and poetical writings of Mr. Poe, and present a full portraiture of his erratic genius. The editors, however, have, we think, failed to impart one very important accessory to the interest of their publication. They do not relate the circumstances under which Poe produced his tales, essays and poems, nor are we even told how or where they were originally published.

We do not find, upon glancing through the leaves, that Mr. Poe's connexion with the Southern Literary Messenger is once intimated. It this omission is attributable to the editors’ jealousy of everything Southern, they have certainly manifested a very unworthy and discreditable spirit. Still, as the book does contain Poe's best productions, it will well repay the price at which it is sold.

It may be found at the bookstore of Mr. J. W. RANDOLPH.

Notes:

An earlier notice of the publication of this edition appeared in Daily Richmond Times (Richmond, VA), vol. 75, no. 326, January 21, 1850, p. 2, col. 6:

THE WORKS OF EDGAR A. POE have been published by J. S. Redfield, in New York, in two duodecimo volumes, one of which contains his tales, and the other his poems and prose miscellanies. These are introduced by notices of his character and genius, by J. R. Lowell, R. W. Griswold, and N. P. Willis. The contents of these volumes are the production of a mind of peculiar, and in some respects, remarkable characteristics, which are well pointed out in the critical articles prefixed to the author's writings.
