Poe, Edgar.

An old classmate of Edgar A. Poe pronounces false the statement by Griswold, that the poet who expelled from the University at Charlottesville. Poe, he says, was fond of gambling, and lost large sums of money at the card table while there. He expressed much regret to his friends on one occasion that he had contracted large debts at gambling and fixed the amount at $2,000, but he was earnest and emphatic in the declaration that they were debts of honor, and he intended to pay them as soon as he could. This statement is confirmed by Mr. William Wertenbaker, the venerable librarian of the University, who remembers Poe well. In his University days Poe was not addicted to intemperate drinking. — Charlottesville Chronicle.
