A Classmate of Edgar Poe.
Ex Mayor Clarke, of Manchester, is one of the few men now living who was a classmate of Edgar A. Poe at the University [column 5:] of Virginia. He says he was struck with Poe's passion for drawing weird and grotesque figures on the wall of his room. He remembers, especially, a griffin that Poe drew which attracted considerable attention among the students. Poe wrote verses a good deal, Mr. Clarke says, but he was more distinguished at the University as a linguist and a crayon artist than he was as a poet. The last time Mr. Clarke saw Poe was at the Richmond Theatre.

James Albert Clarke (1806-1888) was elected as mayor of Manchester in November 1877, by the city council, and again in May 1878, by general election. He held the office until July 1, 1889. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, in Richmond, VA. This short article was reprinted in the Daily Graphic (New York, NY) for December 18, 1880, p. 2, col. 2.
