Poe was at the University in 1826. Of his college associates the following are known to be living besides Mr. Clarke, of Manchester: Thom. Bolling, Orlando Fairfax, and Wm. H. Haxall, of Richmond; Robert Carter, B. H. Magruder, and William Wertenbaker, of Albermarle; William M. Burwell and General George M. Graham, of New Orleans; William Farley Gray, of New York; Lewis Harvie, of Amelia; R. M. T. Hunter, of Essex; Emanuel Miller, of Cincinnati; General John S. Preston, of South Carolina; Rev. Philip Slaughter, of Culpeper; Dr. Richard H. Stuart, of King George; Governor Thomas Swann, of Maryland; and Henry Tutwiler, of Alabama.

Of his contemporaries who were prominent men in after life, but now dead, we may mention Judge R. W. Blow, of Norfolk; Judge Thomas S. Gholson, of Petersburg; Professor Gessner Harrison; Albert L. Holladay, missionary to Persia; Hon. E. E. Hubbard, of Buckingham; Hon. Robert E. Scott, of Fauquier; Judge Henry Shackelford, of Culpeper; and Tazwell Taylor, of Norfolk.
