EDGAR POE'S ‘TAMERLANE.’

EDGAR POE'S first volume of verse, ‘Tamerlane and other Poems,’ referred to in last week's Atheneum as about to be reprinted “from one of the two or three copies known to have escaped destruction,” evidently alludes to the copy I discovered at the British Museum, no one there, previous to my discovery, having been aware of its existence. I published a full account of the little booklet, together with copious extracts and bibliographical information, in Belgravia for June, 1876; whilst a complete reprint of the poem, together with variorum readings, will appear in my forthcoming complete edition of Poe's ‘Poetical Works.’ For the present, I shall be glad to learn where the other copies are which are “known to have escaped destruction.” I may add, the volume was never published, and that Poe's American editors and biographers have disbelieved in its existence.

JOHN H. INGRAM.

Notes:

The man named here as “Herne Shepherd” was “Richard Herne Shepherd” (1842–1895), generally known as a bibliographer, particularly known for his bibliographies of Dickens, Thackeray and Tennyson.

The comment to which Ingram is replying was a brief statement in “Notes from Cambridge,” dated November 13, 1883, beginning on page 636, in the Atheaneum for November 16, 1883

[page 637, column 3, continued:]

FROM one of the two or three copies known to have escaped destruction (perhaps the only copy that has ever reached this country) of Edgar Allan Poe's first tiny volume of verses, ‘Tamerlane and other Poems,’ published, or at least printed, at Boston in 1827, it is intended to issue a limited reprint. Mr. Herne Shepherd proposes to prefix a bibliography, a table of textual variations, and other particulars. The reprint will be strictly limited to one hundred numbered copies. Mr. Redway is to publish the book.
