The Monument to Edgar A. Poe. — Professor Elliott, who has the matter in hand, has received contributions to the amount required, $1,500, for the monument which it is proposed to erect over the remains of the poet. Edgar A. Poe. in the Westminster cemetery, on Fayette street, near Green street. The sculptor will be selected and the work proceeded with at once, so that before the spring is over the monument will be erected. It will be dedicated with fitting ceremony. Baltimoreans will then not be ashamed when asked by strangers to show them the grave of the weird genius. The monument designed by Mr. Frederick, the architect of the now city ball, is to be an obelisk of pure Italian marble, in style simple, chaste and dignified, with a bas relief of Poe, from an accurate likeness, on one of the four panels, and appropriate inscriptions and emblems on the other three. The erection of the monument was inaugurated by the Public School Teachers’ Association of Baltimore.
