[page 175, column 1, continued:]

EDGAR ALLAN POE (5th S. v. 88.) — In a work published in New York in 1856, entitled The Works of the late Edgar Allan Poe, it was stated that his father was originally a law student, and that he eventually eloped with an English actress named Elizabeth Arnold. He himself became an actor, and performed, together with his wife, in various cities in the United States, for upwards of eight years. At length his wife and he died, within a very short time of each other, leaving three children entirely destitute. Their second son, Edgar, was born at Baltimore in 1811, and was adopted by a wealthy merchant, one Mr. John Allan, who, [column 2:] on account of his reckless disposition, eventually cast him off. Being once more left without money, he took to literary pursuits in order to gain a livelihood. He finally died at Baltimore on Oct. 7, 1849. I think this statement will somewhat coincide with that quoted by MR. MATTHEWS.

Notes:

The 1856 work cited would be Griswold's “Memoir” of Poe, which by that time had been moved to the front of volume 1. This letter repeats a number of Griswold's biographical errors. The identity of W. S. of Manchester is unknown.
