153. John H. Ingram to Sarah Helen Whitman. Postcard

3 June 1876

Yours containing Mrs. H[oughton]'s card, Mrs. S[mith?]'s letter, &c. to hand. Do you see our Notes & Queries? I have taken up cudgels there once or twice of late for E.A.P. v. your countrymen. I am writing at the British Museum. The Union Magazine (not called Sartain's Magazine until Jany 1849) is before me: in the number for November 1848, page 200, is the poem “To ——” by E.A.P. Graham's for that date, or any date, is not here. Up to Jany 1849 the magazine was called the Union, thence to Jany 1850 Sartain's, & after Jany 1850 Sartain's Union Magazine. I was, therefore, really correct.

J.H.I.

If the lines appeared in Graham's for Oct. 1848, as you fancy, then they were probably sent to both magazines, but it is strange that both should have omitted the same line. The work by “Diabolus” I cannot discover here.

J.H.I.
