This book is the first annotated index of the flora, fauna and some mythical beasts and monsters in the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The eminent Poe scholar, Dr. Burton R. Dr. Woolfson had a long and brilliant career as a professor. He was also a lieutenant-colonel in Civil Air Patrol (an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force) where he conducted graduate courses for teachers in Aerospace Education, Metereology and Celestial Navigation at Montana State University, the University of Alaska in Anchorage, and New York City. He was also a professor at Yeshiva University and Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. During the years he was news editor of The American Banker he also conducted courses at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations of Cornell University.

Professor Woolfson was the recipient of many citations and awards for his poetry, articles, and the story of his life as a child and youth growing up in the small New England city of Malden, Massachussetts. He received the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Key. Also, he was inducted-into the New York University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, the honorary fraternity in Education, and served for over twenty years as Assistant Examiner in Speech for the New York City Board of Education.

The author, Dr. Woolfson, was a founding member and President or Vice-President of many well-known cultural organizations, among them: The Bronx Council on the Arts, which presents an annual award in literary arts of $1500.00 named the William C. Woolfson Literary Award; The Bronx Museum of the Arts, The Bronx Society of Science and Letters, The Jewish Historical Society of New York and The American Society of Geolinguistics.

His published articles appeared in The American Banker, the New York Teacher, L’Education Nationale (Paris), Malden Evening News and others. Also among his publications are They Were Here — Some Bronxites Who Have Achieved, and English for Use. Some of his works to be published soon are: “Mr. Zero — A Memoir Biography of Urbain Ledoux,” a text for students to whom English is a second language, a collection of his poems, and an unfinished autobiography: “Four Score and More.”
