Notes:
William Mentzel Forrest (1868-1956) taught Biblical History and Literature at the University of Virginia 1906-1939. He was born in Baltimore, MD, where he attended public school. He sought higher education at Transylvania University, in Kentucky, and The College of the Bible, at Lexington, KY (1888-1892); and at Hiram College, OH (1894, where he received his BA); graduate student, University of Chicago (1900). During this period of eduction, he held a number of jobs in Baltimore, inclding as a messenger and clerk for the Maryland Bible Society (1882-1884) and as a chemist in the Baltimore and Ohio Laboratory (1885-1887). He was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) about 1893, and served as a pastor of a church in Medina, OH (1894-1896), and Ann Arbor, MI (1897-1899). After spending several years in Calcutta, India, Reverend Forrest returned to the United States in 1903, and entered the position of a lecturer for the University of Virginia Bible Lectureship, until 1906, when he became an Associate Professor of Biblical Studies. He became a full professor in 1909, the centennial year of Poe's birth.
It is assumed that the contents of this book have lapsed into the public domain, the original copyright being after 1922, but before 1964 and not maintained. The Poe Society of Baltimore further presumes open copyright for the goal of providing free access for educational purposes. We ask all users of this material to respect the somewhat uncertain nature of the copyright, and not to exceed what would typically be considered as fair use (generally interpreted as selective quotations and/or paraphrasing of only a small percentage of the total material, and with the appropriate attribution and citation).
For some reason, Forrest generally spells “Al Aaraaf” as “Al Araaf,” with only one of the leading ‘A's in the second part of the name. This clear editorial choice has been allowed to stand in the current presentation, without further comment.
