Fifty copies of this checklist have been made. The list of French translations given here is thought to be fairly complete for the period covered. Naturally, I have made full use of the work of my predecessors, especially that of Léon Lemonnier, but I have also added new items of some importance. Among these might be mentioned the identification of Gustave Brunet, the first of Poe's many imitators, adaptors and translators, the revelation of the first separate publication in a foreign language of a work by Poe, and the addition of several names to the roster of his French translators: Cezano, Lermia, Milner, Roger and Spoll, all of whom were overlooked by Lemonnier.

Thanks to the excellent book on Poe in Hispanic Literature, by Professor Engelkirk, the list of titles in Spanish is probably very nearly definitive.

The remaining sections are, for the most part, woefully inadequate, and it is in there that I am counting on the generous help of my colleagues in correcting the present entries and in adding any new ones they may know of. I should like particularly to expand the sections devoted to the East European languages and to add others for the Oriental languages.

It is my hope to have a manuscript ready to submit to an editor by mid-October of 1959, but I shall welcome any communications that may reach me at a later date. Letters will reach me at my permanent address (2150 West Lawn, Madison 5, Wisc.) Or at my summer address (Wayne, Maine) during the months of July and August. Correspondents may rest assured that their assistance will be acknowledged, not only by a personal letter of thanks, but also by appropriate mention in the published bibliography.
