Status: Accepted
Argument: Poe to J. E. Snodgrass, Oct. 7, 1839, "In the Octo.
no: all the criticisms are mine--also the gymnastic article" (Ostrom, Letters,
p. 120). In his June 1, 1840 letter to W. E. Burton, Poe notes his pay
for "...services of proofreading; general superintendence at the printing-office;
reading, alteration, & preparation of M.S.S., with compilation of various
articles, such as Plate articles, Field Sports &c" (Ostrom, Letters,
p. 131).

Title: "Chapter on Science and Art, A" (4 installments: Burton's
Gentleman's Magazine, March 1840, p. 88; April 1840, p. 193; May
1840, p. 246; July 1840, p. 49.)
Status:
Argument: Quinn notes, "A series of short paragraphs which appeared
under the general title of 'A Chapter on Science and Area,' in March, April
and May, 1840, are probably by Poe. . . . The style of these paragraphs
resembles Poe somewhat, and since one issue is signed 'Eds. G. M.,' he
probably had at least some share in them" (Quinn, Edgar Allan Poe,
pp. 295-296). Thomas and Jackson attribute the first three installments
of this series to Poe without explanation (The Poe Log, p. 292,
293, 294, ).

Title: Eureka (1848)
Status: Positive
Argument: This book was an extended version of Poe's lecture
on "The Universe." In his letter to Maria Clemm, Poe notes "I have no desire
to live since I have done 'Eureka.' I could accomplish nothing more" (Ostrom,
Letters, p. 452). In a letter to Charles F. Hoffman from September
20, 1848, Poe defends Eureka against misrepresentations of pantheism
(Ostrom, Letters, pp. 379-382).
-
Title: "Literati of New York, The" (Godey's Lady's Magazine,
May-October 1846)
Status: Positive

Title: "Literati, The" (1850)
Status: Positive
Argument: This collection of Poe's critical writings was published
by R. W. Griswold as volume 3 of his collected edition of Poe's works (1849-1850).
At first glance, it would appear that Griswold randomly assembled a number
of Poe's reviews and appended them to the original 38 papers from "The
Literati of New York" series. The arrangement appears to be a somewhat
clumsy attempt to combine these disparate items into a single format. It
is likely, however, that Griswold merely edited and printed items that
Poe himself had accumulated as part of his projected book on "Literary
America." Poe clearly intended to recycle substantial material from his
earlier reviews and no doubt planned to create a more harmonious presentation.
