NAPOLEON’S MAXIMS OF WAR. — A neat pocket edition of these maxims, of the greatest captain of the age, translated from the French, by Colonel D’Aguilau, has just been published by Mr. Redfield of this city. General Scott recommends the book to both “regular and volunteer,” as “a study that cannot fail to set all young officers on a course of inquiry and reflection tending greatly to other improvement.” The work will, no doubt, secure an extensive sale.

This item was attributed to Poe by W. D. Hull, as “the notice may be Poe's.” Without substantial comment, Hull seems to feel that the notice carries “an army man's recommendation,” presumably thinking about Poe's own short time in the army and at West Point.
