Text-02a — “The Valley Nis” — 1831 — [Speculated faircopy
manuscript Poe prepared for publication. The manuscript has apparently not survived, but this version is
presumably recorded in Text-02b.]
Text-02b — “The Valley Nis” —
1831 — POEMS — (Mabbott text A — This is Mabbott's copy-text for this early
version)
Text-03a — “The Valley Nis” — early 1836 — [Speculated new
manuscript of the poem Poe prepared in anticipation of publication in the Southern Literary Messenger.
The main change is in the final stanza, and is probably too extensive to have merely been made on the pages of
the earlier printing. Poe may also have not wanted to draw attention to the fact that the poem had been
printed a few years before. The poem, as printed, does not carry a line indicating that it was original to the
Messenger.]
Text-03b — “The Valley Nis” —
February 1836 — Southern Literary Messenger — (Mabbott text B)
Text-04a — “The Valley of Unrest” — before April 1845 — (A
new faircopy manuscript, prepared for publication in the American Review. Cullen B. Colton states that
the manuscript was among those “either lost or stolen.” No trace of a manuscript is known, but it
was common practice for such material to be destroyed during or after typesetting. Poe himself saw no
particular importance in his manuscript once that version was set in type. The future value of these
manuscripts was, of course, not recognized at the time. C. B. Colton is mistaken when he implies that this
printing was a “first printing,” although it is the first printing of the revised version.)
Text-05a — “The Valley of Unrest” — before September 6, 1845
— [Speculated copy of the American Review with changes marked in anticipation of reprinting in
the Broadway Journal.]
Text-06a — “The Valley of Unrest” — before September 6, 1845
— [Speculated copy of the Broadway Journal with a single change marked in anticipation of
reprinting in the RAOP.]
Text-06b — “The Valley of Unrest”
— 1845 — RAOP — (Mabbott text E — This is Mabbott's copy-text for the
final version)
