Text-02a — “A Tale of Jerusalem” — 1832 — (Speculated
faircopy manuscript sent to the editors of the Saturday Courier as an entry in their contest, and from
which the story was initially printed. As was typical, the manuscript was probably destroyed in setting type
for Text-02b.)
Text-03a — “A Tale of Jerusalem” — 1832-1836 — (Speculated
copy of the Saturday Courier with revisions made with the intention of reprinting the tale. This
missing text is presumably reflected in text-03b.)
Text-04a — “A Tale of Jerusalem” — about 1839 — (although
these pages in the Duane copy of the Southern Literary Messenger show no sign of changes, the version
published in TGA shows numerous modifications, which suggests an intermediary form. It is likely,
therefore, that Poe made changes in copies other than those which were ultimately owned by Duane, and that
those copies have not been located and possibly have not survived. Poe appears to have attempted to erase his
changes in the Duane copies, and it is possible that a copy exists in which these erased changes have been
overlooked. This missing text is presumably reflected in text-04b.)
Text-05a — “A Pig Tale” — 1842 — manuscript title revision
in TGAPP (This tale appeared in the second volume of TGAPP, which has not survived. Thus, these
manuscript revisions are lost, but presumably recorded in Text-05b.)
Text-05b — “A Tale of Jerusalem”
— September 20, 1845 — Broadway Journal — (Mabbott text D — This is
Mabbott's copy-text) (For Griswold's 1850 reprinting of this text, see the
entry below, under reprints.)

does contain errors and is somewhat outdated.)
