• Text-01 — “The Colloquy of Monos and Una” — about May 1841 (There are no known draft manuscripts or scratch notes reflecting the original effort of composition. Without explanation, Mabbott (T&S, 2:607) suggests that the story “was probably written in May or June, 1841.” This date is likely based on the fact that Graham's was usually available by the middle of the month prior to the month of issue.)
• Text-02 — “The Colloquy of Monos and Una” — about May 1841
  • Text-02a — “The Colloquy of Monos and Una” — about May 1841 (Speculated faircopy manuscript prepared for publication in Graham's. Although not mentioned by name, this tale is presumably the “paper in the August no: which will please you” as Poe wrote on July 12, 1841 to Snodgrass. As was typical, the manuscript was probably destroyed in setting type for Text-02b. Since Poe was an editor of the magazine at this time, and less concerned about having to sell a story to a publisher, the manuscript may have resembled that for “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” written about the same time. While reasonably neat and readable, that manuscript, which does survive, comprises smaller sheets pasted together to make a fuller page size, and includes corrections.)
