New-York: May 10, 1849.
My Dear Sir —
I forward some more of the “Marginalia” — rather more piquant, I hope, and altogether more to my own liking, than what I sent before. I shall probably be in Richmond about the 1rst of June & will bring the MS “Raven”, in obedience to your flattering request.
Truly yours.
Edgar A Poe
John R. Thompson Esqr

Notes:
The holder of this manuscript, the Henry E. Huntington Library, has identified the letter as a forgery, but without supporting explanation. It may be presumed that the designation was sent to them by Thomas O. Mabbott, who was suspicious of a promise of a manuscript of The Raven for Thompson, who is not known to have owned such an item. This judgment, however, seems unfair, and barring more tangible evidence, the letter should be accepted as genuine.
