Continuing with the edition originally planned by Thomas Ollive Mabbott, beginning about 1918, and continued by Burton R. Pollin, Stuart and Susan Levine were assigned by Burton Pollin to prepare several additional volumes in the series. Complications prevented these volumes from being published by Gordian Press, and eventually they appeared instead issued by the University of Illinois Press.
The collected edition still remained incomplete when Pollin died in 2009. Although several additional volumes had been tentatively assigned to other scholars, it is currently unlikely that further volumes will be issued in the series.
Because it was specifically designed to complement the Mabbott and Pollin volumes, there is no duplication of contents. Treating the combination of volumes as a single series, therefore, the set is often referred to collectively as the Mabbott/Pollin edition. No official series title was assigned to the two separate books completed by the Levines. The title of the Pollin series has been used for the sake of convenience.
The Collected Writings of Edgar Allan Poe (The Levine Volumes) (2004-2009)
As a relatively modern edition, with many copies available in libraries around the world, no census of copies has been attempted.
Both volumes include the following biographical notes about the Levines:
STUART LEVINE, professor emeritus of English, University of Kansas, A.B., Harvard University, and M.A. and Ph.D., Brown University, is the founding editor of American Studies and founding chair of the American studies department at the University of Kansas. He has published books of original fiction and volumes on technical writing, on Poe, on Native Americans (with N. O. Lurie), on American painting, and, with Susan F. Levine, annotated editions of Poe's work. His writing awards include the Gross-Woodley Award in Fiction, the Anisfield-Wolf Award in Race Relations, and a citation from the National Council of Christians and Jews. A Fulbright lecturer in Argentina, Costa Rica (twice), Mexico, and Italy, he has also taught at Brown, the University of the West Indies, the University of Wisconsin, Kansas State University, and the University of Missouri—Kansas City. A professional musician, he was principal French horn of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and had a weekly network radio program of music commentary.
SUSAN F. LEVINE, B.S.Ed., M.A., Southern Illinois University, is a former university administrator at the University of Kansas, where she completed a Ph.D. in Spanish with an emphasis on Latin American literature. She has taught Spanish language and literatures and has held a Fulbright lectureship in American literature in Asuncion, Paraguay. She has published articles on Latin American and Spanish authors and has collaborated for many years with Stuart Levine on editions and scholarly studies of the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
To this information may be added that Stuart George Levine was born on May 25, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY. He died on October 29, 2016, in Lawrence, KS. Susan Fleming Levine was born on July 31, 1938. They were married on June 6, 1963, in Minneapolis, MN.
