[FAREWELL TO MASTER CLARKE]

Charles Marshall Graves, in “Landmarks of Poe in Richmond” (The Century Magazine, April 1904), tells us that when Joseph H. Clarke stopped teaching in 1823, “Poe was selected by the boys to deliver the farewell ode, and did so with grace and with satisfaction to all.” Graves was using local traditions; the story probably comes from Clarke.
