Weird Tales was a popular pulp magazine, starting in the Spring of 1923 and lasting through the Fall of 1954. In addition to new tale and poetry, it regularly reprinted older items that would fit the designation of “weird,” including many of Poe's works. Perhaps more significantly, it published a number of stories and poems by H. P. Lovecraft, Seabury Quinn, August W. Derleth, and Robert E. Howard. A later incarnation of the magazine is not accounted for in these indexes.
Nearly every issue included an editorial section called “The Eyrie” (also known as “a chat with readers”) which featured letters from readers, sometimes with comments and announcements from the editor. With the creation of the Weird Book Club, which was essentially a list of names and addresses for members, a section with that title was created, but was treated inconsistently — sometimes it was included as part of “The Eyrie” and sometimes separately, although usually in close proximity. In these indexes, these sections have been treated together except where only the list of members' names and addresses was printed, without the letters from readers.
Excel Spreadsheets (by decade):
None of the spreadsheets contain macros.
Spreadsheet Columns:
The nature of the columns should be more or less self-explanatory, but for the sake of clarity, they are as follows:
A | = | volume |
C | = | issue within volume |
E | = | year(s) (a few volumes cross year boundaries) |
G | = | month(s) (some issues cover more than a signle month, even if even the cover does not formally define a span of months |
I | = | beginning page number |
K | = | ending page number (many longer items are split across non-contiguous pages) |
M | = | A/B for entries to support multiple authors or multiple names (such as pseudonyms and translations) (a very few items may have a C entry, such as multiple authors, one of whom is using a pseudonym) |
O | = | Title |
Q | = | occurrence for serials and series |
S | = | author name |
U | = | type (the destinction between novellette, novella, short story, etc. is somewhat arbitrary) |
W | = | series name (if relevant) |
A narrow, empty column is defined between each column merely for the sake of spacing.
For some items, more than one author is noted. To allow for sorting by author name, these items have been created as double entries, with one for each of the authors. The individual entries are noted by “(&).” Multiple entries are also used for pseudonyms, translations and items that are ghost written, noted parenthetically or in square brackets.
Sorting:
Always remember to select the entire range of data before sorting. Otherwise, associated columns will become scrambled.
