Manuscripts and Authorized Printings:

• Text-01 — “Sonnet” — before November 27, 1847, no original manuscript or fragments are known to exist (but this version, which was sent to Mrs. Lewis on November 27, 1847, is presumably recorded in Text-04. In an 1885 article in the New-York Tribune, Stoddard says that Griswold gave him the manuscript for this poem, from which he quotes a portion, and that he “immediately gave it away to a clergy man of Boston, after writing on its back another sonnet in praise of Poe.” He does not identify the clergyman, nor his own sonnet. This transfer of ownership would have been prior to Griswold's death in 1857. The manuscript has not currently been located, although a brief 1914 newspaper article mentions the manuscript in the collection of the Maine Historical Society, part of the collection of Dr. John Samuel Hill Fogg (1826-1893), then on exhibit. Although born in Portland, Maine, Dr. Fogg lived and practiced in South Boston. He presumably acquired the manucript from the unidentified clergyman.)
