(Under construction)     The purpose of this cross reference is to assist in converting notations that use page numbers in the printed volumes (from the 1948/1966 or 2008  editions) rather than the assigned letter code (such as LTR-158), Check List number (CL-427), or correspondent and date (such as Poe to J. R. Lowell, March 27, 1843). These letter codes were initially assigned by John Ward Ostrom in his editions of Poe's correspondence, and have been retained in the updated edition, with new items numbered appropriately. Since the Check List includes letters to Poe as well as letters by him, and include letter entries for which no text survives (or which is unavailable), this numbering scheme for letter codes differs from the scheme for the Check List. In the 1948 edition, the source notes were given together as a section after the letter chapters. The 1966 supplement combines letter texts, notes and source notes. The 2008 edition moved the source notes so that they directly followed the appropriate letter and note.
