Engraving of Edgar Allan Poe

Mezzotint engraving by John Sartain of Edgar Allan Poe.

This mezzotint engraving by John Sartain was used as the frontispiece of Griswold’s edition of The Works of Edgar Allan Poe, J. S. Redfield, 1850. It is based on the circa 1845 oil painting by Samuel Stillman Osgood, although by no means as fine a portrait as Osgood’s. A variation of the same engraving was used as the frontispiece of J. J. Moran’s A Defense of Edgar Allan Poe, Washington, D.C.: William F. Boogher, 1885.
