[page 2, column 5, continued:]

The Raven and other Poems is the title of a small volume by E. A. Poe, issued as No. VIII. of Wiley & Putnam's American Books. The chief characteristic of its contents is the perfect smoothness of its versification, — a smoothness which is purely and thoroughly artistic, and which springs from a complete knowledge of an art but little understood especially in this country. In this particular Mr. POE has very few equals. His poems evince a brilliant and at times fantastic fancy, but have not the characteristics requisite to wide popularity.
