Edgar Poe.

To the Editor: Poe vs. Roe. I find in the Richmond Dispatch of April 5 what the elegant poet asserts about himself is true. I knew Edgar Poe well — was his friend — attended him as a physician repeatedly. Edgar A. Poe never was a drunkard. As I remarked a few hours ago, dress Poe in rags, and the gentleman is there.

Notes:

Dr. William Gibbon Carter (1824-1881) was a physician in Richmond. His office was at the corner of Marshall Street and Brooke Avenue, at least in 1853. His brother was Dr. John Frederick Carter (1825-1905), who Poe visited on the night before he left Richmond on his fateful trip through Baltimore in October 1849.
