The best life of Poe is that by George Edward Woodberry in the American Men of Letters Series. Following are the dates of earliest publication of the poems and tales included in the present volume. The total number of Poe's tales is sixty-eight, but not more than a dozen, or at the most, a score, are widely read. Most of his writings were published several times during his lifetime, sometimes first in a newspaper, then in a magazine, and finally in a collective edition. Many minor changes were made in the course of the several publications.
