[page 4, column 5, continued:]

Mrs. Russell Stebbins of Ridgefield, once known as a literary lady, has written a private letter speaking kindly of Edgar Allan Poe, and giving as a reason of Dr. Griswold's enmity toward him, the attachment of both men to the same woman — an attachment completely hopeless on the part of both.

Notes:

Although the name of the “literary lady” is not stated, we would now know that the woman alluded to was Mrs. Frances Sargeant Osgood. Other reasons for the enmity between Griswold and Poe have also been suggested, including Poe's harsh comments about Griswold's anthology of The Poets and Poetry of America.
