A Comprehensive Bibliography of Editions and Translations of Arthur Gordon Pym

Burton R. Pollin

The following bibliography of translations, adaptations, and reprints of the Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, numbering three hundred twenty items, represents a search during many years in the major collections in this country and in Europe, from London to Moscow and from Stockholm to Rome and Zagreb.* The national bibliographies have been exhaustively used, as well as bibliographic studies of Poe's works in German, French, Scandinavian and Yugoslavian tongues, Russian, Spanish, and Italian. Through my correspondence with librarians and scholars here and in China, Japan, India, and Hungary, open entries have been filled out and questions have been answered. Personal inspection of the volumes has not always been possible, as I have sometimes indicated, especially for cheaply printed, “ephemeral” sets in which the inclusion of Pym is merely implied in catalogues. For many “collected works” there are no analytic entries in the 1976 National Union Catalogue of the “pre-1956 imprints” (called LC in my lists), but few of these ninety-five sets can fail to include Poe's novel. In the approximately twenty-five not printed in England or America, the presence of Pym has been verified. It is safe to say, therefore, that over three hundred partial or full-text versions of the book have been published since the first edition of 1838 and, especially, since the 1857 magazine and 1858 book translation by Baudelaire (see K.1-2, below). It would be rash to claim that this makes it the most widely dispersed and popular single Poe volume published after his death, since the three individual collections of tales assembled by Baudelaire have probably led to many more translated reprints in other European tongues since the mid-nineteenth century. Yet, the multiplicity of English and foreign-language printings of Pym certainly suggests that the book has by no means fallen into neglect or out of print at any time, especially among readers of juvenile fiction and of “penny dreadfuls.” Skim through the entries for France, England, and Spain to verify the fact that adaptations and cheap two-column, newsprint magazine or book copies were available to the youthful and the impecunious, while the affluent could always procure multivolume sets, some handsomely printed and bound.

The rationale for the inclusion of data in the following list needs to be stated. The arrangement is strictly by countries, lettered from A through CC, and generally within these groups by chronology. Subsequent reprints of the same edition, often under the imprint of another [page 94:] publisher, are usually indicated within the same entry, but for unseen multivolume sets, printed from bought or rented plates, separate entry numbers may have been assigned to an edition which was a virtual duplicate of another of the same or earlier year. Thus, the Charles Richardson ten volume edition of 1902 was probably the parent of a great many editions of the same year and later years (BB.32), some of them concealed by the catalogue omission of the editor or by a partial reprinting only (e.g., of the “tales” in three or four volumes). The indication that an edition is illustrated (“ill.”) may help to indicate the elaborateness of an edition or to differentiate one multivolume set from another, although without knowing the name of the illustrator, one hesitates to make assumptions. Coburn's name in a Russian edition (AA.4) shows the source of this pirated set to be BB.32. An obstacle in furnishing this datum is the tendency of catalogues to call all editions of Pym “illustrated” because of the plates required for the hieroglyphics on Tsalal. For this reason, personal inspection of the volumes was sought. In general, the book has not engaged the attention of eminent artists to the same degree as “The Raven,” illustrated by Doré and Manet. The French have been especially fond of illustrated copies of the work intended for the book-collector, the drawings of Prassinos producing an outstanding one. For several editions, I have indicated the limited number of copies printed, an obvious book-collectors’ appeal; but when the plates have been used and re-used by secondary publishers for so-called “limited editions” (BB.32 and 39), this becomes a spurious distinction. The place, publisher, and date should also help to differentiate one edition from another, save when the plates have been used by firms in different cities and even countries (England and the U.S.A. France and Switzerland), Whenever possible, printings by allied firms in London and New York have been separately listed along with a cross reference. One should note the early development of the publishers’ habit of naming an edition the “Arnheim” or “Richmond” or “Eldorado” edition, with totally unaffiliated publishers sometimes choosing the same reminiscent names. As a discriminant, therefore, such a datum is not always useful. To offset this kind of overlapping, I have furnished the number of pages for single volume editions, whether of Pym alone or of inclusive “tales” or “works”; this information also helps to determine the extent of an adaptation or abridgment (see C.1). Some small indication of the popularity and the type of printing-format accorded the work is provided by the name of the containing series (see L.22 and M.17). Finally, the volume number for Pym in a set or the pages utilized in a one-volume collection have been given as an aid to the student or reader.

I wish to point out a few of the surprising particularities revealed by the following list. The earliest book-publication of the work outside the United States or Great Britain, in both of which there were 1838 editions, appears to be a Leipzig English-language edition of 1856 derived [page 95:] from the Redfield edition of the same year (L.1). This shows the keen contemporary interest on the continent in “Standard American” authors and the rapid spread of “collected editions” of their works. The earliest foreign-language book version of Pym was in the unlikely language of Armenian, published by the Armenian Catholic Mechitarist fathers of Vienna, probably as a textbook for their own students although possibly for distribution abroad among nonacademic Armenians in Europe and the Near East; probably based on Baudelaire's 1857 translation, the work did not bear Poe's name and must have been appreciated for its “thrills” alone. Early reprints or translations of an obviously “popular” nature can be found in England (M.2-4), Russia (AA.1-3), and Spain (X.1-5). This general appeal, not related to the renown of Poe, seems operative also in the first five versions published in Japan. Exotic languages, other than Armenian, used for Pym, are Estonian (I.1), Finnish (J.1) and Marathi (0.1). My investigation has not disclosed any copies in Chinese, Tagalog, Bengali, Arabic, or Afrikaans. However, given the increasing popularity of this work, as the steady increase of editions in the major tongues shows, I anticipate the need for a supplement to this comprehensive 1ist a decade from now. There will inevitably be many more translations, adaptations, and reprint editions of a book that Poe and his publishers never regarded as commercially successful or worth perpetuating.
