Dec. 30   1804   Charles Frederick Briggs born on Nantucket, fourth child of Sally and Jonathan Briggs.
 
    1812   Jonathan Briggs bankrupted and jailed for debt, when British seize his merchant vessel during War of 1812.
 
    1824   Charles Briggs abroad as sailor on voyage to Liverpool.
 
    1831   Oldest brother, William C., captain of shin Phoebe, lost at sea.
 
May 16   1836   Marriage of Charles Briggs and Deborah Rawson.
 
    1838   First listing of Briggs in New York City Directory; employed at Water Street address of wholesale grocers.
 
Summer   1839   Publication of first novel, The Adventures of Harry Franco; beginning of contributions to Knickerbocker and other New York magazines; member of newly-formed American Art Union.
 
    1840-42   Listed in City Directory as partner in wholesale grocers’ firm of Wood, Briggs, and Mather.
 
    1843   Meeting of Briggs and James Russell Lowell; publication of second novel, The Haunted Merchant.
