Appendix II
The Pinto Letters
Ferdinand Mendes Pinto's letters are difficult to trace down, since existing files of the New York Mirror are incomplete and often mutilated. Luckily, however, Pinto's letters, though they were originally written for the daily edition of the Mirror, were regularly printed in the paper's weekly edition, called The American Literary Gazette and New York Weekly Mirror. This periodical has been more reliably preserved on microfilm and in some bound volumes at the New York Public Library.
Following is a checklist of the Pinto letters discovered in this source, as well as the daily edition of the paper. Since the dates heading the letters themselves are part of Briggs's fiction, and easily confused with the dates of publication, I have ignored them in the interest of clarity, identifying each letter by its supposed place of origin and its date of publication in the weekly or daily Mirror. When both periodicals contain the same letter, I have preferred to give the date of the weekly's publication, since this periodical is more accessible.
