31. John H. Ingram to Sarah Helen Whitman

25 March 1874

My dear Mrs. Whitman,

This is the only result obtainable in England, from my inquiries after your book; it is probably, therefore, still in America.(1) Could it have been stopped on account of any writing inside, or on the newspaper cuttings? E.P. & His Critics when received had had the cover nearly torn off, as if to see whether containing any writing.

Faithfully yours,

J. H. Ingram

P.S. I hope you have received all my letters & printed papers safely. I believe I have received everything but this book, although some poems mentioned by you as sent were not in letter.

1. Ingram enclosed a copy of a letter to himself, dated Mar. 24, 1874, from John Tilley, secretary, General Post Office, saying that all possible inquiries for a missing packet addressed to Ingram had been made, without success, and adding that the U.S. Post [page 93:] Office Department did not make searches for missing letters or packets which had not been registered.
