[[Footnotes]]

[The following footnote appears at the bottom of page 21:]

1. HM 2529, c. 1852. This title page appears on the verso of a small sheet, actually a business letter to Chivers. On the face of a brown paper envelope once enclosing many sheets of Chivers’ manuscript are two variant forms of this title. The first, fragmentary, is written on the envelope itself and uses the word “Critical” instead of “Faithful” as here given. The whole title is crossed out. A second title, on a slip of paper pasted on the brown envelope, instead of the dedication to Shelley gives these lines,

Frutto Del Arbol Di Vita.

Inter folio fructus.

Below them is drawn an oval human face, a characteristic Chivers’ drawing.
