Memoranda
————————
————————
[page 2: blank. At least two full sheets are torn out after page 2.]
[page 3: beginning of actual text. This page contains twenty names, items #l-#20, written in clear, black ink. The bottom three inches of this page have been cut off with the possible loss of twelve additional names. Also cut from this page, top center, is a rectangle approximately three inches long and one inch wide which may have stated the nature of the list and/or been followed by Poe's signature.]
[page 4: second page of actual list. This page contains twenty-two additional names, items #21-#42, and is subject to the same mutilations as described for page 3. It is also written in clear, black ink.]
[page 5: third page of actual list. This page contains thirty-two names, items #43-#74, and is also written in clear, black ink.] [page 8:]
[page 6: fourth page of actual list. This page contains thirty-one names, items #75-# 105. Items #75 through #94 are all in the same clear, black ink; the similarity in handwriting and ink color of items #1 through #94 almost suggest that this portion of the list was compiled at a single sitting. Slight variations in ink color and handwriting suggest that items #95 through #105 were later additions.]
[pages 7, 8, 9 and 10 are blank. Following them, an estimated fifty-two sheets have been torn from the notebook; large blank margins remaining from these sheets suggest that there was no writing on them and that they were torn out for scratch paper.]
[page 11 is blank except for these notes:]

[page 12, written upside down in the notebook, contains a list of riddles said to be in Mrs. Clemm's handwriting. These are given in Appendix A. We hope to find their source in some contemporary periodical. Do they give any clue as to the nature of Mrs. Clemm's sense of humor?]
[page 13 continues the list of riddles.]
[page 14 concludes the list of riddles.]
[pages 15 and 16 are blank. A sheet is torn out after them.]
[page 17 is blank and page 18 resumes Poe's list of names which is entirely in pencil. Page 18 contains 31 names, items #106-136.]
[page 19 has the top 3 1/2 inches torn off and contains only thirteen names, items #137-149. Also, the bottom 2 1/4 inches of the page are blank. ]
[page 20, missing the same top 3 1/2 inches as page 19, contains only four items: #150-153. The bottom 3 3/4 inches of the page are blank.]
[page 21 contains twenty-nine names, items #154-182.]
[page 22 contains thirty-two names, items #183-214.]
[page 23, the final page of listings, contains thirty-nine names, items #215-253. Varying styles of handwriting in the pencilled list suggest the possibility of its having been compiled at several sittings:
#106-136 .... page 18
#137-149 .... page 19
#150-153 .... page 20
#154-214 .... pages 21-22
#215-253 .... page 23] [page 9:]
[page 24 contains a list of items, ascribed to Mrs. Clemm, which is reproduced as Appendix B.]
