Thomas Prentice Kettell

(Born: 1811 - Died: October 22, 1881)

Journalist and editor. He died in San Francisco on October 22, 1878. (His death is listed under “Chronological History of Current Events: From January 1 - December 31, 1878,” in The San Francisco Directory, compiled by Henry G. Langley, San Francisco: Francis, Valentine and Co., 1879, p. 40.) A brief obituary is listed in the Daily Alta California and San Francisco Times, Wednesday, October 23, 1878. This obituary notes that Kettell had been an editor of the Alta. The engraved portrait shown here was printed in Hunt’s Merchants Magazine. He is probably best remembered as the author of History of the Great Rebellion, Hartford, CT: L. Stebbins, 1865.
