Mrs. Caroline Matilda Kirkland
(Born: January 12, 1801 - Died: April 6, 1864)
American editor and author. Caroline Matilda Stansbury was born in New York City, and educated in private schools in Poughkeepsi and New Hartford, NY. She married William Kirkland on January 19, 1828. After his death, in 1846, she edited the Union Magazine, where she rejected Poe’s poem “Ulalume” on the advice of Richard Henry Stoddard. Her son, Joseph Kirkland (1830-1894) was a novelist.
Her pseudonyms include “Mrs. Mary Clavers” and “Aminadab Peering.”
