On a few occasions, Poe reviewed himself, generally anonymously (and sometimes with a secret sense of fun).

  • Notice of Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque   (?)  (January 1840, text “A” — Burton’s) (A one-sentence notice. Authorship uncertain.)
  • Review of Tales   (?) (October 1845 — Aristidean) (Mabbott attributes this review to T. D. English, and it is perhaps best thought of as a kind of collaboration.)
  • “A Reviewer Reviewed” (under the pseudonym of Walter G. Bowen)
    • “A Reviewer Reviewed”   (summer 1849, text “A” — “Graham” manuscript, unfinished)
    • “A Reviewer Reviewed”   (March 15, 1896, text “B,” abridged — New York Journal)
    • A Reviewer Reviewed” (1926, Phillips, E. A. Poe the Man, vol. II, pp. 961-967.) (omits the “Sonnet — to Zante”)
    • A Reviewer Reviewed” — 1978 — The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe, vol. 3: Tales & Sketches II, ed. T. O. Mabbott, Cambridge: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press (3:1377-1388)
    • “A Reviewer Reviewed” — 1984 — Edgar Allan Poe: Essays and Reviews, ed. G. R. Thompson, New York: Library of America (pp. 1046-1053)
