Poe in Spanish America: Addenda and Corrigenda

Four recent Poe items may be of interest to those concerned with Poe’s reputation in Spanish America (see PN, II, 18-19). One item is Juan-Eduardo Cirlot, “El pensamieneo de Edgar Poe,” Papeles de Son Armadans, ano xiv, tomo lii, no. clvi (March 1969), 239-244. A second is advertised in the Boletin bibliografico mexicano (Marzo-abril 1969), p. 90: De Poe a Simenon, antologia de cnentos policiacos y de misterio. Pro1ogo, seleccidn y traducci6n por Augusti Bartra (Barcelona, 1969), 800 pp. On the basis of title, the volume must surely have a Poe story in translation. The third is “Mensaje hallado en una botella” in Historia de U.S.A., ed. Rodolfo Alonso, traduccidn de Hugo A. Brown, revisada por Perla Lenci y Raquel Kuperman (Buenos Aires, 1969), pp. 41-53. Finally, “La barrica de Amontillado,” no translator given, appears in Mexico en la cultura, tercera epoca, no. 1, 146 (March 14, 1971), p. 4. This is a section of Novedades, a Mexico City daily. The following additions and corrections should be made in ‘Fugitive Poe References: A Bibliography,” PN, III, 16-19: Josefina Alonso Chavez’ work is a master of psychology thesis from the UNAM (Universidad nacional autonoma de Mexico) and has 108 pp. Abelardo Castillo’s book has 88 pp. and appears in a series — Teatro en el teatro. Here Buenos Aires is misspelled. Blanca Pascual-Leone’s entry is a UNAM, Facultad de filosofia y letras thesis of 108 pp.
