John Carl Miller (1916-1979)

John C. Miller, for many years a dedicated Poe scholar, died on October 17, 1979. His contributions to Poe scholarship and especially to Poe biography were many. His John Henry Ingram’s Poe Collection at the University of Virginia is a valuable guide to that wealth of materials, and his recent Building Poe Biography is an edition of some of the letters from that collection. A second volume of edited materials from the Ingram manuscripts is due to appear soon. Enthusiasm was a mark of all of Dr. Miller’s professional and scholarly activities. His talk was precise and fluent, alive with the energy of his thought and bright with humor. He was a clear-thinking, exact scholar whose delight it was to use the language elegantly. To his friends and colleagues he brought cheer through his spirit and wit. We shall long miss his voice and his pen.
