The text of the title page and front cover are identical, except that an em-dash appears on the cover between the quotation and the name of Cowper. The color of the paper for the cover has alternately been described as “drab,” “tan,” and “tea-colored,” but the precise original coloring is difficult to determine as all of the surviving copies are darkened, foxed and stained to varying degrees.
One may reasonably assume that Poe did not write Thomas’ advertisment on the back cover.
