George Edward Woodberry (1855-1930) was a prominent poet, critic, educator and Poe scholar.
The first edition of 1911 is noted on the copyright page as having been published May 1911. According to the Catalogue of Copyright Entries, published monthly by the Library of Congress (no. 47, July 1911, Part I, Group I, Books, entry 2992), the first edition of the book was copyrighted by J. H. Whitty in Richmond, VA on May 6, 1911 and affirmed June 15, 1911. The 1917 edition does not include such a note, but a presentation copy, from Whitty to G. E. Woodberry was inscribed with the date of May 14, 1917. (This copy is currently in a private collection.) According to the Catalogue of Copyright Entries, published monthly by the Library of Congress (no. 50, July 1917, Part I, Group I, Books, entry 2328), the second edition of the book was copyrighted by J. H Whitty in Richmond, VA on May 12, 1917 and affirmed May 17, 1917.
