Notes:

This was sold at an auction by Herman Darvick on April 5, 1990.

Poe signs many of his letters as here, with an abbreviated form of “Your obedient servant.” Both Poe's signature, and the name “Elwood Evans” are underscored by a simple, doubled-over flourish. The address on the reverse of the letter is “Elwood Evans Esqre” then on the next line “Philadelphia” with two lines, meeting at the right, under “Philadelphia.” The Postmark reads “Philadelphia, PA, SEP 21.”

The name of Elwood Evans appears on Poe's handwritten list of subscribers to the Penn/Stylus, perhaps written 1846-1848. For this list, see Alexander G. Rose III and Jeffrey A. Savoye, eds, Such Friends As These: Edgar Allan Poe's List of Subscribers and Contributors to His Dream Magazine, Baltimore: Edgar Allan Poe Society, 1986, p. 24.
