03. Miss Rosalie Mackenzie Poe, ca. 1850
Courtesy of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, Baltimore, MD
The 4 inch by 6 inch photograph was probably copied from a daguerreotype, currently unlocated. The portrait was donated to the Poe House and Museum in 2002 by a descendant of Poe’s uncle, Henry Herring. The photographer was Richard Walzl, at 205 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD.
05. Miss Rosalie Mackenzie Poe, ca. 1872
Courtesy of Jeffrey A. Savoye
This carte-de-visite belonged to Ella L. Warden, the daughter of Poe's cousin, Mary E. Herring. The photograph was taken by P. L. Perkins, 205 and 207 Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD. Rosalie had come to Baltimore seeking financial aid from her family there. The pencilled writing on the front is Rosalie's. It reads: “Rose M. Poe / Sister of Edgar Allan Poe / Poet.”
Only one other portrait of Rosalie is known, a tintype of approximately the same date as the carte-de-visite, although she is wearing a hat and different clothing. (The tintype is the property of the Poe Museum, Richmond, VA, and is reproduced in Haining, The EAP Scrapbook, p. 36.)
