Volume One

Frontispiece: Edgar Allan Poe, ca. 1846

This portrait was painted from life by John Alexander McDougall (1810?-1894) in New York, where Poe was living at the time. The original, on heavy paper, measures 3 inches by 2 3/8 inches. Although modern eyes may be surprised by the lack of Poe's now-iconic mustache, it was worn only during the last few years of his life. By one account, the painting was made by the artist as a wedding present for Mrs. John Crockett, a cousin of Mrs. McDougall, Mrs. Crockett being a particular fan of Poe's writings. Other documentation, however, indicates that it was not given to Mrs. Crockett until 1860. For a detailed analysis of the portrait and its history, see Michael Deas, The Portraits and Daguerreotypes of Edgar Allan Poe, pp. 28-31.

In volume one of the 1948 and 1966 editions of The Letters appear pictures of Mrs. Elmira Royster Shelton (1:197) and a “self portrait” of Poe (1:213), both dated as about 1845. These pictures are no longer considered authentic and have been omitted accordingly.
