The original quarter-plate daguerreotype, by William Abbott Pratt (1822-1893), measures 4 1/4 inches by 3 1/4 inches, and is housed in an ornate leather case with a gilt frame. The portrait was one of two taken at Pratt's studio, 145 Main Street, Richmond, VA. It is named after John R. Thompson, of the Southern Literary Messenger, to whom it was presented in 1856 and in whose possession it remained until his death in 1873. For a detailed analysis of the portrait, its history, and several related images, see Michael Deas, The Portraits and Daguerreotypes of Edgar Allan Poe, pp. 54-61. As a daguerreotype, the original is a mirror image of its subject, and has been reversed here to provide a more accurate sense of the sitter. Some flaws have also been touched up, including a blemish on Poe's face, just above his mustache. Just barely discernible in the picture, but more obvious in the original, is a small sprig of holly, pinned to the left side of Poe's vest. |

Notes:
All material in this edition is protected by copyright, with all rights having been transferred from Gordian Press to Jeffrey A. Savoye. Permission has been obtained by the Poe Society of Baltimore from the copyright holder to provide this electronic edition for academic and research purposes only. The Poe Society of Baltimore asks all users of this material to respect these copyrights, and not to exceed what would typically be considered as fair use (generally interpreted as selective quotations and/or paraphrasing of only a small percentage of the total material, and with the appropriate attribution and citation).
Although Poe's writings are essentially in the public domain, the texts presented here embody often painstaking scholarship and editorial work, and the product of that effort is protected by copyright. The introductory material, descriptions, and the apparatus of texts and notes are Ostrom's original work, and are even more clearly subject to copyright.
The text for this electronic version of the book was taken from an original printed form, revised for XHTML/CSS and to follow our own formatting preferences. Pagination of the original edition has been included.
The table of contents is a reasonable representation of the table of contents from the original printing. Two small corrections have been applied. The first removed the word “Deleted” from the fourth sub-section of the “Check List of the Correspondence of Edgar Allan Poe,” which in the printed version erroneously read: “Spurious, Deleted, Fake, Misdated, and Doubtful Letters.” The second correction is in the list of illustrations, where illustrations 69-70 have been corrected from the obvious typographical error of “70-79.”
